Themed “The Warm-Beings”, the Guangzhou Design Triennial 2024 kicked off on January 17th at Guangdong Museum of Art (GDMoA) in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, China.
As the first Guangzhou Design Triennial, the exhibition gathers nearly 100 groups of top-flight designers and artists from about 27 countries and regions to showcase their original designs with the warm vibe from different cultural backgrounds to the public.
In the opening ceremony, Vicky Richardson, Head of Architecture and Heinz Curator at Royal Academy of Arts and one of the Theme Exhibition Curators of the triennial, explained that the theme “The Warm-Beings” is about “care”. “For me, the most important lesson that I've learned from this exhibition is that if we care for design and architecture and the environment then we also care for humanity. These are two parts of the same thing,” said Richardson.
The triennial will last until May 31st. At present, the exhibition pieces are all on display, with a large number of design objects and models from various countries, as well as video works, showing a wide range of international design styles. The design of the exhibition venue is unique. Visitors enter the interactive area to feel the "warmth" of the designs and take photos in front of the works, in order to appreciate their design concepts and capture their special beauty.
As one of the earliest art museums in China to establish the triennial exhibition mechanism, Guangdong Museum of Art hosted the first Guangzhou Triennial Exhibition in 2002. This year, GDMoA launched the first “Guangzhou Design Triennial”, aiming to build a communication platform of art and design for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the world.

广东美术馆馆长、本次展览总策展人王绍强在开幕式致辞时指出，本次展览通过主题展、资料文献展，以及多个社区项目/平行展，共同聚焦设计的人文关怀。主题展策展人、英国皇家建筑学院建筑系主任维姬·理查森在开幕式致辞时说：“我从展览中学到的最重要的一点是，对于设计、建筑、环境的关注与对人文的关怀是一体的。”
本次三年展展期持续至5月31日。目前，展览参展作品布置就绪，来自各国的大量设计实物和模型，以及影像作品，展现出多元化、国际化的设计风格。展场设计独具特色，有的观众进入互动区，感受“设计的温度”，并争相在作品前拍摄，留住观展时刻的灵感与对美的感受。
据主办方介绍，广东美术馆发起并自主策划的“广州三年展” 是我国最早的“双/三年展”之一，也是广东美术馆具有国际影响力的学术品牌。作为广州的城市名片和文化盛事，“广州三年展”已成功举办七届。2024年，广东美术馆守正创新，重磅推出“广州设计三年展”，希望为粤港澳大湾区乃至全世界搭建艺术与设计的桥梁，构设理论与实践的枢纽。
